- 1 box marble cake mix e.g. Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker
- 3 large eggs
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup milk or buttermilk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 –3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 –2 tbsp hot water or milk
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9-inch round cake pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together cake mix, eggs, oil, milk, vanilla, and sour cream (if using) until smooth.
Transfer about 1 cup of the batter to a separate bowl. Mix it with cocoa powder, hot water, and chocolate syrup (if using) to make the chocolate swirl.
Pour half the vanilla batter into the pan. Add spoonfuls of chocolate batter, then the rest of the vanilla. Swirl with a knife.
Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then move to a wire rack to cool completely.
